What is a mukhi? A plain guide to Rudraksha

What the lines on a Rudraksha mean, how to count them, and why some mukhis are rare.

A Rudraksha is the seed of the fruit of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree. When the blue outer flesh of the fruit is removed, a hard, ridged seed is left. That seed is the bead.

The lines are the mukhis

Look closely and you will see deep natural lines running from the top of the bead, where the stalk joined, to the bottom. Each line marks a face, a mukhi (literally "face"). A bead with five lines is a 5 Mukhi Rudraksha; a bead with seven is a 7 Mukhi.

Inside, each mukhi usually corresponds to a separate chamber in the seed. That is why an X-ray, which shows the chambers, is the clearest way to confirm the count on beads with many mukhis.

How to count them

  1. Hold the bead with the natural opening at the top.
  2. Find the deep lines that run all the way from top to bottom. Ignore shallow cracks and lines that stop part way.
  3. Turn the bead slowly and count each full line once.

Why some mukhis are rare

The tree produces far more 5 Mukhi beads than any other kind, which is why 5 Mukhi beads are the most common and the most affordable, and why most japa malas are strung with them. Beads with very few or very many mukhis are much rarer, and their prices reflect that.

A genuine round 1 Mukhi Rudraksha is exceptionally rare. Many beads sold as "1 Mukhi" are a half-moon shaped variety, and some are a different seed altogether. If you are offered a cheap round 1 Mukhi bead, be careful.

Tradition, not promises

In tradition, each mukhi is associated with a deity: 5 Mukhi with Kalagni Rudra, a form of Shiva; 11 Mukhi with the eleven Rudras and Hanuman; and so on. Our mukhi guide lists them all. We describe these associations as tradition. We do not promise that wearing any bead will bring health, wealth or any other result, and we would be wary of anyone who does.
