Kushavart Kund
Kushavart (Kushavarta) is a stone tank in Trimbakeshwar town, a short walk from the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple. The Godavari rises on the Brahmagiri hill above the town, disappears into the mountain, and is traditionally held to resurface here, which is why Kushavart is revered as the river's point of origin.
The present tank was built in 1750. It is about 21 feet deep and fed by natural springs.
According to the Shiva Purana (Kotirudra Samhita), the sage Gautama, by his penance, brought the Ganga down to Brahmagiri. The river became the Godavari, also called Gautami Ganga, and Gautama formed a sacred whirling pool, renowned as Kushavarta Tirtha.
Local tradition explains the name from kusha, the sacred grass, and avarta, a turning or whirl.
Trimbakeshwar holds its own bathing days in the Simhastha Kumbh, kept by the Shaiva akharas, with the Trimbakeshwar Amrit Snan on 12 September 2027. Kushavart is at the heart of these ceremonies.
