Chakra Teerth
Chakra Teerth is a sacred tirth on the Godavari at Trimbakeshwar. The priests of Trimbakeshwar describe the river here as flowing in three directions, and hold that the west-flowing stream they call the Ganga meets the Godavari near Chakra Teerth.
The Gautami Mahatmya, the part of the Brahma Purana that praises the Godavari and its holy places, tells of a Chakratirtha on the river. In it Lord Vishnu worships Lord Shiva on the banks of the Godavari with a thousand lotuses. When one lotus is missing he offers his own eye in its place, and Shiva, pleased, restores his eye and gives him the Sudarshana Chakra. The text says the holy place bears the mark of the discus.
The Gautami Mahatmya names more than one Chakratirtha along the Godavari. Local tradition at Trimbakeshwar connects this tirth with Lord Vishnu and the Sudarshana Chakra.
