Ramkund
Ramkund is a stone bathing tank on the Godavari river at Panchavati, the old heart of Nashik, and the most revered ghat in the city. The present tank was built in 1696 and was later restored by Gopikabai, mother of the Peshwa Madhavrao.
For centuries families have come here for snan, and to immerse the ashes of their loved ones in the Asthi Vilaya kund, in the belief that the river carries the departed soul to liberation.
Panchavati is where, in the Ramayana, Lord Rama lived with Sita and Lakshmana during their exile. Local tradition holds that Rama bathed at this spot, which gives the kund its name, and that he performed the last rites of his father, King Dasharatha, here.
Ramkund is the main bathing place of the Simhastha Kumbh in Nashik. The Simhastha of 2026–28 begins with the flag hoisting (dhwajarohan) on 31 October 2026, and the Amrit Snans fall on 2 August, 31 August and 11 September 2027.
