How to care for your Rudraksha

Simple, traditional care to keep a Rudraksha bead or mala clean, supple and strong for years.

A Rudraksha is a natural seed. With a little care it will last a lifetime; without it, it can dry out and crack.

Everyday care

  • Keep it dry. Take it off before bathing or swimming, and before using soap, shampoo or perfume.
  • If it gets wet, pat it dry with a soft cloth.
  • Store it in a clean cloth pouch or a small box when you are not wearing it.

Cleaning

Once a month, or whenever it looks dull:

  1. Brush the bead gently with a soft brush to remove dust and skin oils from the grooves.
  2. Rinse briefly in clean water if needed, then dry it thoroughly in the shade. Never leave it in strong sun.

Oiling

After cleaning, apply a drop of pure ghee or sandalwood oil with your fingertips and work it into the grooves. Leave it for a few hours, then wipe off the excess with a soft cloth. Oiling keeps the bead from drying out.

Thread and capping

Most beads are worn on a red or black cotton or silk thread. Check the thread regularly and replace it when it frays. If your bead is capped in silver or gold, ask a jeweller to check the capping once a year.

Curing a new bead from the fruit

A bead freshly taken from the fruit needs curing before it is worn. Our fruit kit guide explains how.
